Phil Lesh, who played alongside the Grateful Dead and Phish for more than 30 years, has died at the age of 59, the band announced today.
Lesh, who also had a successful solo career, had been suffering from liver failure for the last few years.
He died last night at his home in Berkeley, Calif., the band said in a statement.
Phish frontman Trey Anastasio said he was saddened to hear of Lesh's death.
"Words fail to describe the sense of loss I feel at the passing of Phil Lesh," Anastasio said.
"Our heartfelt condolences go out to Phil's family and friends."
Lesh started the Unbroken Chain Foundation after his liver transplant in 1998.
The foundation, which has given millions of dollars to charities in the Bay Area and around the world, recorded a series of shows with Phish in April, and plans to release the recordings on a double CD.
"Not as yet, it's pretty much local, but what we're planning to do is release the recordings of the April shows we recorded with the Phish guys, and a portion of that we're going to try agree on a charity that we can donate some money to from the proceeds of the recording," L
